The state of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations is one step closer to shortening its name. Rhode Island wants to drop “Providence Plantations” from its name because it conjures up images of slavery. But some lawmakers including Rhode Island State Representative Michael Rice, a Democrat, oppose the move. He discusses his position.
