Three others were injured after coming in contact with hot power lines.brbrIt was just before five when the home owner’s cousin notice smoke coming from the back of the house. We were in the front room and heard crackling – we were barbequing so we didn’t think nothing of it until I saw the blinds warping, says Jerome Kinney.brbrKinney and the owner, Nykia Malveaux, ran out of the front door and grabbed the water hose. They tried to douse the flames, but they were too strong. In fact the smoke was so heavy, it was too much for firefighters, who immediately went into the house thinking kids were inside. brbrWhile you’re searching for somebody you can have what’s called a flash over, a big ball of fire come towards you. There’s so many things that can go wrong – that sounds like what we had today, says Assistant Fire Chief Jack Williams of the Houston Fire Department.brbrTurns out, the young boy they thought was inside was at his grandmother’s house, but Nykia and Jerry Maveaux’s house wasn’t so lucky, it was a total loss. We just both cried, that’s all we could do because it escalated so fast, says Nykia. I still have my family – all that stuff can be replaced, Jerry said.brbrThe cause of the fire is not known at this time. Arson is investigating. Williams says the firefighters will be okay, none suffered life-threatening injuries.
