PWASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama is insisting that he’s doing everything he promised during the campaign, when it comes to ending U.S. military involvement in Iraq. He tells the PBS program, The Newshour, that his critics may not have been paying attention to his comments during two years of campaigning for the presidency./P

PObama says there are some modifications to the plan, after consultations with commanders on the ground. But he says the pullout he announced today is basically the thrust that he’s been talking about for several years. And he says it’s a responsible solution./P

PObama announced today in North Carolina that he plans to leave up to 50,000 troops in Iraq after combat forces leave by the end of August, 2010. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who says he’s surprised that Obama plans to leave that many troops there, is suggesting that it’s not a done deal. He says he looks forward to further discussing the plan with Obama./P/FONT
